Shengjinkou Fm
Type Locality and Naming
Junggar Basin, Turpan Basin. The Shenjinkou Formation was erected by Xia Gongjun (1956) in the Shenjinkou area of the Turpan Basin. It was named by the No. 109 Party under the Division of Explorations of the Petroleum Administration of Yumen as the Shengjinkou Horizon in 1958. The naming locality is situated at Shengjinkou area 20 km east of Tulufan City, Xinjiang, with the reference section in the Lianmuxin area about 20 km west of the Shanshan County. Lithology and Thickness
The Shenjinkou Formation is composed mainly by gray and gray green sandstones intercalated with limestone and calcareous sandstone. A layer of grayish green and yellowish green sandy mudstone occurs at the base. The upper part of the particular formation is intercalated with a small amount of purple bands. Siderite and gypsum intercalations were found in the Shenjinkou section of Turpan Basin. The formation is 50-250 m thick in the Junggar Basin, 15-62 m thick in the Turpan Basin. It is remarkable for its greenish Fish clay bed in the Turpan Basin.
Relationships and Distribution
Lower contact
The formation contacts conformably with the underlying Hulubihe Fm (Junggar Basin) or Sanshilidadun Fm (Turpan Basin).
Upper contact
The formation contacts conformably with the overlying Lianmuqin Fm.
Regional extent
It distributed in the Junggar, Turpan, Hami basins and Karamay City. The particular formation is distributed in the Tulufan and Junggar Basins, as well as in the East Junggar and West Junggar intermontane basins. The lithology of the formation is more or less consistent from region to region, and with its thickness varying in a range from 20 m to 130 m.

Fossils
The formation contains rich fossils of charophytes, ostracods, bivalves, and fish. It yields fish fossils such as Uighuroniscus sinkiangensis, Siyuichthys ornatus and Wukungia huoyanshanensis; conchostraca fossils as represented by Turfanograpta chowmincheni and T. chance, and Ostracoda fossils as represented by Cypridea (C.) koskulensis. In the area of the southern margin of the Junggar Basin the particular formation yields also Charophyta fossils.
